The Return of the Suzuki GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R
The Suzuki GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R are making a comeback, and I can't remember the last time a sentence made me so happy. While the GSX-R 1000 was still available in the US, it had not received any updates since 2022 and was close to being discontinued.
Suzuki is not only updating the GSX-R 1000 and GSX-R 1000R, but they are also reintroducing them to Europe to meet Euro 5+ emissions standards. And all of this is happening on the 40th anniversary of the model—what a reason to smile!
For 2026, both the GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R will come in a special 40th anniversary Edition Livery, featuring classic-inspired paint schemes and 40th anniversary badging on various parts of the bike. However, the upgrades go beyond just the appearance.
The most significant updates are to the engine, which was one of the main reasons for the previous model's decline. The new 998cc inline-four cylinder engine now meets noise and emission regulations required for Euro 5+, although this has resulted in slightly lower power figures compared to the 2022 model.
The 2026 GSX-R1000/GSX-R1000R will produce 192.4 hp at 13,200 rpm and 81.1 lb-ft of torque at 11,000 rpm, slightly less than the previous model. Despite this, the power output is still more than enough for an exhilarating ride, and it's great to see this iconic superbike continue in production.
Other improvements include a new lightweight Li-Ion battery to offset the weight increase, as well as enhancements to reduce friction and improve combustion efficiency. The models also feature advanced electronics such as a 3-axis, 6-direction IMU and Suzuki's Clutch Assist System (SCAS).
Both the standard and "R" models come equipped with Brembo Monobloc 4-piston calipers, with the "R" variant featuring additional upgrades such as a Showa Balance Free Front (BFF) fork and Balance Free Rear Cushion (BFRC-lite) shock. The top-spec model also includes winglets for added downforce.
While the MSRP for the GSX-R 1000 and GSX-R 1000R is yet to be announced, the return of these models is a positive development for the motorcycling community. This is truly a feel-good story for enthusiasts everywhere.
