Custom Cruisers by BMW

Custom Cruisers by BMW

When discussing custom cruisers, BMW is not typically the first brand that comes to mind. Traditionally, American icons like Harley-Davidson and Indian have dominated this space with their relaxed silhouettes and extensive collections of chrome accessories. However, BMW's R 12 and R 18 models are changing that perception. These boxer motorcycles are practically screaming to be customized right off the showroom floor.

German custom shop WOIDWERK showcased this customization potential at BMW Motorrad Days 2025 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Led by Ralf Eggl, WOIDWERK unveiled "The Speed Sisters," a unique pairing of the R 12 and R 18 that demonstrates the bikes' versatility while still honoring their BMW heritage.

While each bike has its own distinct characteristics, they both share a cohesive design language.

The R 12 is the more sporty of the two, featuring a lighter, sharper, and more compact design. WOIDWERK raised the chassis by 15mm, shortened the tail in a classic bobber style, and enhanced the riding posture for a more aggressive look. With a handmade Alcantara seat, custom 3D-printed tank cover, and black ceramic-coated exhaust from Hattech, the R 12 exudes a clean, bold attitude.

Conversely, the R 18 showcases its power proudly. The tank was raised and narrowed by 30mm, giving the bike a more athletic stance. A floating solo seat and custom rear hoop reshape its silhouette, while a 20mm lift and upgraded 320mm front discs with radial calipers provide enhanced performance. Many visible components were CNC-milled or 3D-printed in-house, resulting in a cohesive, hand-crafted feel throughout the build.

Both bikes feature a playful paint scheme with a 3/4 white, 1/4 green motif, paying homage to the long, snowy winters of Bavaria. This detail ties the entire customization together, serving as a subtle reminder that motorcycles can be both works of art and functional artifacts.

You don't need to fully customize your bike to appreciate the potential of the R 12 and R 18. Whether it's a simple seat swap, handlebar change, or custom paint job, these models are designed for personalization. In a segment often constrained by tradition, BMW's approach feels refreshingly open-ended and inclusive.
