Yamaha Thailand Releases 2023 SR400

It's natural to feel sad when beloved motorcycle models are discontinued. In February 2021, Yamaha announced a yearlong farewell celebration for the SR400. Japan also introduced a Final Edition model in 2021.

The SR400, which began production in 1978, remained largely unchanged throughout its lifespan. While the later years saw the addition of fuel injection, the bike remained true to its kickstart-only design.

Yamaha Thailand 2023 SR400

The Yamaha Thailand release of the 2023 SR400 is showcased in the banner above. It is available in two colors: Silky White and Mat Gray Metallic. The price is ฿295,000, equivalent to approximately $8,492 as of January 5, 2024.

Although Yamaha Thailand released a Limited Edition 44th Anniversary Edition SR400 in 2022, there is a notable distinction between a special limited edition model and a regular production model. The availability of the regular 2023 SR400 for purchase at local Yamaha dealerships in Thailand indicates that the model is not completely discontinued. It is still manufactured in Japan and exported to Thailand, as stated in the official brochure.

The specifications of the 2023 SR400 remain unchanged. It is equipped with a two-valve, four-stroke, air-cooled, single overhead cam, 399cc single-cylinder engine. The claimed power output is 17.5 kilowatts (approximately 23.4 horsepower) at 6,500 rpm, with a torque of 27.8 newton-meters (approximately 20.5 pound-feet) at 3,000 rpm.

The bike has a curb weight of 175 kilograms (386 pounds) and a seat height of 790mm (31.1 inches). It features a nonadjustable telescopic front fork, twin rear shock and swingarm suspension setup, offering 150mm (5.9 inches) of front wheel travel and 105mm (4.13 inches) of rear wheel travel. The braking system consists of a single disc brake in the front and a drum brake in the rear. It rides on 18-inch spoked wheels with tubed tires.

The promotional video from Yamaha Thailand, included above, is from a few years ago. However, apart from the paint and graphics, it accurately represents the current SR400. This bike knows its target audience and embraces its identity without apology.
