The adventure-scooter segment is experiencing growth, with several new players entering the market in recent years. Interestingly, Honda was arguably the first to enter this sub-segment with the launch of the X-ADV in 2016, followed by smaller versions like the ADV350 and ADV160. However, other Japanese manufacturers have been hesitant to enter the segment, as many of the new ADV-style scooters come from European, Chinese, and Taiwanese manufacturers.
For example, Peugeot recently introduced the XP400 adventure scooter in the global market. I had the opportunity to ride this rugged scooter recently, and while it may lack some power, I can understand the appeal of a go-anywhere scooter. Chinese brands have also ventured into the segment, with Zontes showcasing its 501 series of maxi-scooters at EICMA 2023. Even electric scooter brands like Gogoro have shown interest in these rugged scooters, as seen with the unveiling of the CrossOver.
Now, Taiwanese motorcycle brand SYM is entering the mid-size ADV scooter segment with the launch of the ADXTG 400. This new scooter clearly takes design inspiration from other adventure scooters, featuring rugged bodywork, dual-purpose tires, long-travel suspension (for a scooter), and even a rugged skid plate and upswept exhaust. To add some flair, the ADXTG 400 also includes a fancy aluminum swingarm, a feature not commonly found on scooters.
In terms of performance, the SYM ADXTG 400 is equipped with a 399cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine that claims to deliver 35 horsepower and 27 pound-feet of torque. These large single-cylinder-equipped scooters tend to run surprisingly smoothly, so it's likely the same is true for the ADXTG 400 thanks to a large counterbalancer. The scooter also boasts a premium tech package, including Bosch ABS and traction control, with the option to disable rear ABS for off-road riding. Additionally, it features full-LED lighting and an emergency braking alert that flashes the lights during heavy deceleration.
As of now, SYM has not announced the pricing and availability of the new ADXTG 400. However, it is expected to be exclusively released in the European market in 2024, following the trend of many maxi-scooters and ADV scooters of this kind.
