Chinese Motorcycle Manufacturer Zontes Expands into Premium Maxi-Scooter Segment

Zontes, a Chinese motorcycle manufacturer, has been targeting the beginner-friendly market in Europe for some time. However, at EICMA 2023, the brand showcased its intention to enter the premium segment with a range of new offerings. Zontes is particularly interested in the growing maxi-scooter segment, as demonstrated by its recent launches, including the high-end 501 series.

Maxi-scooters have gained popularity in recent years due to their combination of long-distance comfort and amenities found in touring bikes, along with the practicality and ease-of-use of scooters. This makes maxi-scooters ideal for commuting in town and for longer trips outside the city. While many high-capacity scooters use twin-cylinder engines, Zontes has chosen to stick with a single-cylinder engine.

The liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine in the 501 series has a displacement of 491cc. It is equipped with heavy counter balancers to reduce vibration and delivers a respectable power output of 35 kilowatts (47 horsepower) and 53 Nm (39 pound-feet) of torque. In the European market, where the scooter has been launched, it complies with A2 licensing regulations, making it suitable for both beginner and intermediate riders. The scooter has a claimed top speed of 175 kilometers per hour (108 miles per hour) and features a large 17-liter fuel tank for extended range.

Zontes now offers the 501 range of maxi-scooters in various models. The 501E is an evolution of the smaller 350E and is designed as a GT maxi-scooter. The 501H is the sportiest model, characterized by contoured lines and a minimalist accessory package. The 501K is similar to the 501E but has more rounded bodywork for a streamlined appearance. Finally, the 501G stands out with its adventurous design, complete with crash bars and wire-spoke wheels. Zontes aims to enter the adventure scooter segment with the 501G, a segment popularized by models like the Honda X-ADV and the recently launched Peugeot XP400.

Pricing and availability for the new maxi-scooter lineup have not yet been announced by Zontes. However, based on the brand's previous models, it is expected that the 501 series will be competitively priced compared to its established competitors.
