Husqvarna is a long-standing brand that has evolved over time. Originally known for manufacturing guns, it has since expanded into motorcycles, sewing machines, and chainsaws. While these products are now owned by different companies, they all trace their roots back to the original Husqvarna.
After being owned by Electrolux and Cagiva, Husqvarna Motorcycles came under KTM ownership in 2013 and remains so today. Interestingly, some employees formed Husaberg when they objected to moving to Italy under Cagiva's ownership. However, KTM's purchase of Husqvarna brought the two brands back together.
Prior to KTM and Cagiva, Husqvarna experimented with automatic drivetrains in their bikes. Originally designed to help new riders in the Swedish army, the automatic technology proved successful in competition and led to the creation of the 1984 Husqvarna 500 AE.
This unique piece of Husqvarna history was recently sold at auction for £4,963 (approximately $6,257). While it didn't end up in the hands of the British dirtbike YouTube channel 999Lazer, they found it intriguing due to its unconventional design.
It's worth noting that the rise of electric bikes has brought automatic motorcycling back into consideration. Many electric bikes have forgone gears and clutches for simplicity and improved power delivery. With this in mind, is it time for automatic dirt bikes to make a comeback?
