BMW Motorrad Unveils the 2024 M 1000 XR

BMW Motorrad introduced the 2024 M 1000 XR, the latest addition to its M motorbike family, on October 26, 2023. This model is no longer a prototype, as it was previously showcased by Peter Hickman during a lap around the Isle of Man TT course earlier this year.

Unlike previous releases, the unveiling of the M 1000 XR was not a surprise, as BMW has been transparent about its upcoming models. The redesigned 2024 R 1300 GS, the company's flagship model, was announced in June 2023 and arrived on schedule on September 28, 2023.

Now that the production M 1000 XR is here, let's take a closer look at its specifications.

Engine and Performance

The 2024 BMW M 1000 XR is equipped with a tuned version of the ShiftCam inline four-cylinder engine found in the S 1000 RR. BMW claims that it produces 201 horsepower at 12,750 rpm, which is 31 hp more than the 2024 S 1000 XR. The peak torque is 113 newton meters at 11,000 rpm. The engine has a bore and stroke of 80mm by 49.7mm and a compression ratio of 13.3 to one.

BMW made several adjustments to the M 1000 XR, including switching to a 47-tooth rear sprocket, shortening the fourth, fifth, and sixth gear ratios, and improving the air intake system with variable intake funnels for better airflow at higher engine speeds. The claimed top speed is 170 mph, and it can accelerate from zero to 124 mph in 7.2 seconds.

Suspension and Brakes

The M 1000 XR features an aluminum bridge-type frame with the engine as a stressed member. It has a 45mm upside-down telescopic front fork, an aluminum swingarm, and a monoshock. The suspension is electronically semi-adjustable and comes with BMW's Dynamic ESA. The bike has a suspension travel of 5.4 inches at both ends.

For braking, the M 1000 XR is equipped with a pair of four-piston BMW M Sport calipers and two 320mm brake discs in the front. In the rear, there is a single two-piston floating caliper with a 265mm disc. The bike also comes with standard switchable ABS.

Wheels and Dimensions

The M 1000 XR comes with 17-inch forged aluminum wheels, and riders have the option to upgrade to M Carbon wheels. The wheelbase is 60.9 inches, the steering head angle is 64.9 degrees, and the castor is 4.62 inches. The bike has a length of 85.4 inches, a width of 33.5 inches (without accessories), and a height of 54.4 inches. The curb weight is listed at 492 pounds.

The standard seat height is 33.4 inches, but BMW offers M Sport Low and M Sport High seat options, which lower and raise the seat height to 32.3 inches and 34.3 inches, respectively.

Features and Electronics

The M 1000 XR comes with a range of standard equipment, including dynamic damping control, an M battery, M titanium silencer, sport windscreen, adjustable steering damper, M brake and clutch levers, M seat, keyless ride, heated grips, cruise control, USB charging port, Headlight Pro with adaptive headlight, M winglets, and BMW's Ultimate Care break-in service with purchase.

The bike is equipped with a 6.5-inch TFT dash, which has an OBD interface for connecting accessories such as the M GPS datalogger and M GPS Laptrigger. The M 1000 XR also comes with various ride modes and electronic rider aids, including a pit lane speed limiter, launch control, dynamic traction control, wheelie control, slide control, dynamic brake control, shift assistant pro, automatic hill start control pro, and tire pressure monitoring (RDC).
