1969 Yamaha TR-2 for Sale
This 1969 Yamaha TR-2 is currently located in San Diego, California and is in search of a new owner. Yamaha produced around 400 of these bikes as racing homologation specials to compete with their first-ever 350cc two-stroke race bike. This particular TR-2 is one of those bikes, although the total mileage is unknown.
The TR-2 is equipped with a 348cc two-stroke parallel twin engine, which generated a claimed 39.7 kilowatts (approximately 53.2 horsepower) at 9,500 rpm when it was new. It features dual 34mm Mikuni carburetors and a points ignition system.
In 2023, the engine of this 1969 Yamaha TR-2 underwent refurbishment, including the replacement of the crankshaft, bearings, connecting rods, and piston rings. However, it is unclear whether the bike is currently operational. The seller does not mention it, and the accompanying video does not show a startup. Additionally, it is unknown whether this bike has a notable racing history.
Notable features of this TR-2 include a beautiful period-correct fairing, a clear Gustafsson windscreen, an oil tank tucked inside the tail, drum brakes at both ends, an aluminum belly pan, a steering damper, and a six-gallon fuel tank.
The suspension consists of a telescopic fork at the front and a swingarm with dual shocks at the rear, which have preload adjustability. It is equipped with clip-on handlebars and a single gauge at the front, featuring a tachometer from Yazaki Meter. The bike has a redline of 9,500 rpm.
The engine and frame share the matching number R3-900115. However, this bike does not come with a title or current registration and is being offered by the seller on a bill of sale only.
The 1969 Yamaha TR-2 is currently listed for sale on Bring a Trailer through Symbolic International, a dealer based in San Diego, California. The listing will end on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 2:48 p.m. Eastern Time. As of now, the highest bid on this no reserve auction is $9,000, with a total of nine bids placed.
While we cannot predict the future, previous auctions for 1969 Yamaha TR-2s have shown a range of prices over the past decade. In 2016, one example sold in Italy for €23,400 (approximately $24,953). Another one was sold in the UK in 2018 for £9,000 (about $11,072). In 2022, another TR-2 was sold in the UK for approximately £7,475 (or $9,195). These bikes were also sold on a bill of sale and had notes about the engine not turning over, among other things. However, they appeared visually appealing in the accompanying photos.
