Small-Displacement Adventure Bike: The Honda CB200X

In the United States, we typically consider engines with a displacement of 200cc to be small. Most motorcycles on American roads have engine sizes larger than 400cc, which is understandable given the wide roads and fast traffic. However, if we shift our focus to the Asian market, we will notice the opposite trend.

In countries like India, motorcycles with engines of 300cc and above are considered "big bikes." These bikes not only provide enough power for India's densely populated and traffic-heavy roads, but they are also more expensive than their smaller counterparts. As a result, many manufacturers offer smaller versions of popular models. One example is the Honda CB200X, which is a scaled-down version of the larger Honda CB500X.

Some may find the concept of a small-displacement adventure bike confusing. However, in the Indian context, bikes like the CB200X are ideal for comfortable long-distance rides, especially considering the less-than-ideal road conditions in India. The CB200X has been refreshed for the 2023 model year and is built on the same platform as the Honda Hornet 2.0 naked bike, but with all the characteristics of an adventure bike.

At its core, the CB200X is powered by a 184.4cc, air-cooled, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine. This reliable engine is not known for its performance, as it only produces 17 horsepower and 11.2 pound-feet (16 Newton-meters) of torque. However, it is designed for longevity and reliability, as evidenced by its simple construction. The 2023 model year has seen minor tweaks to the exhaust system and OBD-2 compliance. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel through a manual five-speed gearbox, now equipped with a new slipper clutch.

In terms of its structure, the Honda CB200X features a steel perimeter frame, inverted front forks, and a preload-adjustable rear monoshock for suspension. It is equipped with front and rear disc brakes, although it only has rudimentary single-channel ABS. The bike rides on 17-inch tires, with the front and rear tires measuring 110/70 and 140/70 respectively.

In terms of pricing and availability, Honda has slightly increased the price of the 2023 CB200X, which now retails for Rs 146,999, or approximately $1,767 USD. The price increase of Rs 2,499 ($30 USD) is almost negligible, especially considering the updates the model has received.
