Pirelli to Become Official Tire Provider for MotoGP in 2027
Starting in 2027, Pirelli will take over as the official tire supplier for MotoGP, replacing Michelin who has been supplying the racing series since 2016. Pirelli recently conducted a sprint simulation and other experiments at Misano in preparation for the upcoming 2027 season.
Why is this significant? Well, in 2027, MotoGP will see a major rule change that includes a reduction in engine size from 1000cc to 850cc, fewer aerodynamic aids, elimination of ride-height and launch control devices, as well as a decrease in fuel capacity, among other adjustments.
These changes are expected to shake up the MotoGP grid when the new season begins, making testing the new Pirelli tires crucial in developing a completely new bike, especially with the decrease in overall downforce due to the removal of winglets and shark fins on the GP bikes.
During the recent test at Misano, each MotoGP team participated using a single bike, with only their official test riders allowed to ride. Riders such as Augusto Fernandez, Daniel Pedrosa, Takaaki Nakagami, Lorenzo Savadori, and Michele Pirro represented their respective teams.
Ride height devices were turned off for the test, and some bikes were adjusted and aerodynamic packages modified to mimic the upcoming 2027 rule changes. Although the test was not open to the media, Pirelli released a statement after the session, expressing satisfaction with the results.
According to Motorsport.com, each team was given seven sets of tires to test at Misano, which had hosted the San Marino GP the weekend before, as well as the mid-season MotoGP test on Monday. The tire allocation included two front tire options and three different rear tires.
While initial feedback seems positive, we will have to wait for the test riders' opinions on how the new Pirelli tires performed during the testing session.
