Great Wall Motor's Motorcycle Division Souo

Great Wall Motor (GWM) is not typically associated with motorcycles, as it is known for being one of China's leading automakers specializing in SUVs, pickups, and electric cars.

However, GWM has ventured into the motorcycle market with its new division Souo. The company, which already produces the electric Mini in partnership with BMW, is now focusing on two-wheeled vehicles.

Last year, Souo unveiled the S2000 tourer with a powerful 1,999cc flat-eight engine generating 151 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. Equipped with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox with a reverse gear, the S2000 aimed to compete with the Honda Gold Wing in the luxury touring segment.

Following the success of the S2000, Souo has introduced the S2000CT cruiser lineup, inspired by Honda's Rune from the early 2000s. The range includes four versions: LH2000-3, LH2000-4, LH2000-5, and LH2000-6, each offering unique features such as solo riding, passenger seats, footpegs, and hard luggage.

Despite their massive size, the engineering behind these bikes is impressive. Souo has innovatively redesigned the front suspension to combine a telescopic fork appearance with a Hossack-style double-wishbone system, showcasing the evolution of Chinese motorcycle engineering.

While Chinese motorcycles were once disregarded in the West, GWM's S2000 and S2000CT models are changing perceptions by competing with established brands like Honda, BMW, and Harley-Davidson.

Although the availability of these bikes in the US is uncertain due to tariffs and pricing challenges, GWM's investment in ambitious motorcycle projects signals a shift in the industry towards more competitive and innovative offerings.

For motorcycle enthusiasts, this means a changing landscape with the potential for better machines and value. The introduction of the S2000CT cruiser suggests that the future of motorcycling may include formidable contenders from unexpected brands.

Even if you may not see these bikes in local dealerships, the existence of a flat-eight cruiser from GWM adds an intriguing element to the global riding community.
