India’s Electric Vehicle Market

India’s market for motorcycles and scooters is huge, with over 15 million two-wheelers sold annually. Recently, the country has emerged as a hub for electric vehicle startups, driven by government support, increasing fuel prices, and urban traffic congestion.

One of the leading players in this space is Ather Energy, a company based in Bangalore that was established in 2013. Ather gained recognition for its stylish and tech-savvy electric scooters like the 450 series. However, the company's latest venture, the Redux, showcases a different side of their brand.

The Redux is described by Ather as a "moto-scooter" concept. It features a futuristic design reminiscent of a stripped-down sportbike, with bodywork made from an experimental composite material called AmplyTex. The lattice seat is 3D-printed, highlighting unconventional and lightweight construction.

The machine is held together by a cast aluminum frame, with oversized aerodynamic scoops dominating the side profile. Ather's design philosophy focuses on an "inside-out" approach, exposing key components to create a more integrated experience for the rider.

What sets the Redux apart is its adaptability. The ergonomics, suspension, and rider position can dynamically change, allowing the vehicle to transition from a scooter stance to a sportbike crouch. Features like clip-on handlebars, haptic throttle inputs, and Ather’s Morph-UI system enhance the motorcycle-like experience.

While Ather has not disclosed performance figures for the Redux, the concept is not intended for production yet. It serves as a testing ground for hardware and software experiments to explore responsiveness, engagement, and rider interaction.

Projects like the Redux signal a shift in how electric two-wheelers are envisioned, challenging the traditional view of scooters as practical city vehicles. This suggests a future where electric scooters blur the line between scooter and motorcycle, offering not just efficiency but also excitement for riders.
