Challenges and Opportunities in the Electric Powersports Industry
To rephrase the iconic Three 6 Mafia, "It's tough for an electric powersports startup in today's world." The era of quick and easy startup funding driven by the success of Tesla, Rivian, and others has passed. Additionally, subsidies are dwindling as a new US administration criticizes the technology it considers "woke," a term that is open to interpretation.
Despite these challenges, there are signs of hope within the industry. Some manufacturers have managed to navigate the difficulties and adapt to changing public perceptions. Zero is focusing on the youth market with small dirt bikes, Stark Future is achieving record sales and profitability, Can-Am is expanding its range of EV models, and Polaris is enhancing its charging network for off-road adventures.
However, the story of Taiga, a Canadian startup that aimed to innovate the industry with electric powersports vehicles like snowmobiles and PWCs, is particularly noteworthy. After facing bankruptcy a few months ago, the company was rescued by external investors who believed in its vision. Taiga has now resumed production and is introducing a new model to its PWC lineup called the Orca WX3.
The Orca WX3 is an extended version of Taiga's Orca P2 PWC, designed as a three-seater for tour operators in Europe. According to Taiga's co-founder, Samuel Bruneau, there is significant interest in electrification in Europe, particularly in the marine market due to concerns about noise and pollution from traditional Jet Skis. The Orca WX3 is powered by a 120kW battery pack generating around 160 horsepower, providing approximately 2 hours of ride time.
With fast-charging capabilities, Taiga aims to make charging more convenient for users. The company's investors also own Vita electric boats and Aqua Superpower EV chargers, allowing for a seamless integration of electric watercraft and charging infrastructure. The Orca WX3 is priced at $23,999 for the three-seater model and $20,999 for the two-seater model, targeting European operators and resorts.
