Rooftop Tent Transformation

Rooftop Tent Transformation

My Roofnest Condor 2 rooftop tent has completely changed my Can-Am side-by-side. Originally designed for a rack with external lights, I have turned it into a more functional machine that allows me to venture deep into the woods and stay comfortably for multiple nights. It has served as my base camp for exploring the elk woods this year, and has been a great companion, despite one issue that I plan to address soon.

However, like all rooftop tents, it has a major flaw in its design - the setup and tear down process is extremely challenging.

Rooftop tents, especially hard-shell ones like my Roof Nest, are heavy and awkward to handle. They cannot simply be lifted onto the roof with ease. Even with my shorter-than-average roof height on the Can-Am, it is a difficult task. For larger vehicles like full-size trucks or SUVs, such as Toyota's new Land Cruiser, the challenge is even greater. This leads to limited options, such as installing it permanently or using a pulley system in the garage, which requires high ceilings.

Thule has introduced a solution that is ideal for side-by-sides - a hitch-mounted tent called the Outset.

The Outset, originally launched in Europe, attaches to any 2-inch hitch receiver and weighs 163 pounds. It unfolds into a 3-person sleeping area, providing a convenient alternative to traditional tents. It offers three doors for easy access and elevates you off the ground for added comfort.

Unlike conventional tents, the Outset can be detached from the vehicle, allowing for easy exploration without having to pack up everything. This makes it a perfect addition for any side-by-side adventurer.

While the price of $4,700 may seem steep, the comfort and convenience it offers are invaluable. Considering the starting price of most rooftop tents, the investment is worthwhile for those seeking a more enjoyable camping experience.

Are you ready to enhance your camping adventures with the Thule Outset? I am already envisioning exciting journeys ahead.
