Recalls and Class Action Lawsuit Against Suzuki Motor of America Inc.

Brands don't want recalls, but it's commendable when an automaker informs the public about faults to ensure safety. However, facing a class action lawsuit for failing to do so is much worse, especially when it happens twice in just two years. Unfortunately, Suzuki Motor of America Inc. finds itself in this position.

On August 14, plaintiffs Alex Lopez and Travell Woods filed a class action suit against Suzuki in a California federal court. They claim that some Suzuki motorcycles have a faulty front brake master cylinder, violating state consumer laws.

The issue with the front brake master cylinder is that the piston, made of zinc, reacts with brake fluid, causing hydrogen gas build-up, pitting, and debris formation. This can lead to a loss of braking power, endangering riders and passengers.

Woods and Lopez allege that Suzuki has been aware of this defect since 2013, supported by claims, dealership records, and customer complaints. Despite issuing a recall in 2013, Suzuki allegedly failed to implement a redesign to fix the problem.

The plaintiffs claim economic losses due to decreased motorcycle value and repair costs. They seek to represent California residents who purchased Suzuki motorcycles from authorized dealerships, suing for violations of consumer laws and breach of warranty.

Adding to Suzuki's troubles is a previous class action filed in November 2023, alleging defects in sports motorcycles known to the company since 2004.
